History: beyond the PSP

Sony unveiled the Vita name in 2011 after introducing the system as NGP. The handheld arrived in Japan in 2011 and reached Europe in 2012. It pursued a more console-like control layout while experimenting with touch on both sides of the device. Its identity grew beyond portable versions of familiar series: original adventures, Japanese role-playing games and smaller releases gave the platform its own character. The Vita is a separate generation from PSP, not a PSP model with a new screen.

Hardware and controls

The Vita pairs a 5-inch, 960 × 544 display with two analogue sticks, a directional pad, four face buttons and shoulder controls. The front touchscreen and rear touch pad offer additional input without replacing traditional buttons. Cameras and motion sensing give developers more options. Compared with the PSP’s single analogue nub, the second stick is particularly useful for camera control. Games vary in how much they use touch, so the hardware’s unusual features are worth trying in more than one title.

OLED or Slim?

The original PCH-1000 family uses an OLED display and includes Wi-Fi and 3G/Wi-Fi variants. The PCH-2000, often called Slim, uses an LCD screen, a thinner and lighter body, micro-USB and 1 GB of built-in storage. Both target the same Vita game library. Choose by screen preference, condition and included accessories rather than assuming the later model runs a different generation of games. Check the precise model when sourcing a charging cable; the original and Slim connectors differ.

Game cards, memory and saves

Vita game cards and Vita memory cards serve different purposes. The game card contains the physical release; storage is needed for downloads, updates and save data according to the game. Official removable storage uses Sony’s Vita memory-card format, not PSP Memory Stick Duo or an ordinary SD card. Budget for usable storage when comparing systems. Before formatting, changing accounts or selling a console, check what data is stored where and preserve your own saves. Installed downloads should not be treated as transferable ownership of the seller’s account.

Games that show its personality

The starting points below are editorial suggestions for exploring different sides of the library. Tearaway makes touch feel integral to its paper world, while Gravity Rush builds movement around shifting gravity. Persona 4 Golden offers a longer role-playing commitment, and LittleBigPlanet brings a playful platforming alternative. Check the exact Vita release when collecting: a remake or port on another console can have different content and controls. For imports, confirm language support on the actual edition rather than relying on the series name.

PSP and Remote Play

The Vita has no UMD drive, so a physical PSP disc cannot be inserted or converted into ownership simply by having the disc. Check compatibility and access for any digital PSP title individually. PS4 Remote Play streams a game running on a PS4 to the Vita; it does not turn PS4 software into a native Vita game. Sony documents wireless pairing through PS4 Link, with game and connection requirements. Remote Play and a game’s own online multiplayer are separate features and should be assessed separately.

Current services and the store

Checked on 7 September 2026: Sony has announced a July 2027 closure of the PS3 and PS Vita stores in the remaining countries, including the Netherlands. This is an announced future change, not a claim that the Dutch Vita store is already closed. Sony says previously purchased content will remain downloadable for the foreseeable future, subject to its current notices. Individual games can lose online services on separate schedules. Consult the linked regional support pages before relying on a purchase, redownload or multiplayer feature.

Buying and documenting a Vita

Our inspection checklist: test both sticks for unwanted movement, all buttons, front and rear touch input, sound, charging and game-card recognition. Inspect the screen on bright and dark scenes, and ask about replaced displays, batteries or shells. Check whether the correct cable and working storage are included. In your collection, record the model, colour, condition, accessories and repairs separately. Compare completed sales for similar examples; an asking price or a special colour alone does not establish value.

Care and preservation

Keep the screen and rear touch surface clean without abrasive materials, and protect exposed sticks during transport. Avoid heat, moisture and force on connectors. If the case bulges or the battery appears damaged, stop charging and arrange appropriate repair. Back up personal saves before resets or storage changes. Community software and modifications are distinct from official support; document any changes so a future owner knows what has been altered. A clear record of software, saves and repairs is a useful preservation habit.
